St. John’s Lane Church

Stand on the north side of the River Liffey as you walk towards the Liberties, and you might just catch a glimpse of one of the most beautiful spires in the city. With its dramatic, unusual silhouette, John's Lane marks the start of a charming and historic district in the city. At over 200 feet high, John's Lane has the tallest steeple in the city, but it's just as impressive inside. The church has one of the finest collection of stained glass out of a gallery (there's an excellent exhibition in the Hugh Lane Gallery, if you're interested). There are windows by the famed artist Harry Clarke, and it's a hauntingly beautiful place to take in a few moments of calm.

There are regular masses held but generally the church is open during the day, so you can go in and take a look around at your leisure.

As the church is right on Thomas Street, it's a good place to start a little tour of the Liberties. It's halfway between Wren and the Guinness Storehouse, and also close to all of the whiskey distilleries (like the Dublin Liberties Distillery). There are some great little bars and cafés along the way; walk down Francis Street and pop into Two Pups Café; for some French toast and seriously good coffee.
